As part of the EU Sustainable Energy Week activities, MIEMA has organised on Friday 15th June at Corinthia Palace Hotel in Attard, an information workshop about the implementation of the European Energy Award (eea®) methodology in Malta.

This event took place in the context of the MEDEEA transnational project co-funded by the European Commission under the MED programme. The project addresses one of the main weaknesses of the MED i.e. an energy level lower than the EU average. The project promotes the take up of a common tool for energy planning across the Mediterranean, as means to increase efficiency thus reducing both greenhouse gases emissions and the costs of energy consumption. Energy planning is also key to promoting and stimulating the use of renewable energy sources, which does not only bring environmental benefits but brings along also technology innovation, economic development, and a new qualification of the workforce.

This workshops aimed to explain the process, and the progress made in Malta to date, in having towns and cities receive the European Energy Award – eea®. This is in fact a methodology which rewards cities and towns with a label for outstanding efforts in the governance of energy related fields (especially energy efficiency). The main audience of local councils representatives was also presented with the situation of the Maltese presence in the Covenant of Mayors, as well as with various measures that could be taken in the short, medium and long term as part of a Sustainable Energy Action Plan.
