LiMIT4WeDA: Light Mobility and Information Technology For Weak Demand Area
International Event and Mid-Term Conference:
Promoting Sustainable Mobility
The Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency (MIEMA) is the only Energy Agency in Malta. It aims to draw key stakeholders together in a strategic partnership to boost energy planning on a national level. The agency is involved in various networks implementing European and local projects of benefit to the entire European Continent.

MIEMA is currently participating in the LiMIT4WeDA project – “Light Mobility and Information Technology FOR Weak Demand Areas” in the Mediterranean region.

This project deals with mobility issues in areas characterised by weak demand for transport, such as rural areas, generally afflicted by inefficient public transport systems thus catalysing the use of private transportation. This results in a reduction in accessibility while invoking the use of unsustainable modes of transport.

Various technology applications for innovative transport have been investigated, together with the elaboration of solutions that can yield the best results. One strategy is to enhance already existent modes of transport, making them more accessible and less expensive.

MIEMA is working on establishing a car-sharing system that can contribute to reduce traffic congestion and address environmental concerns. This project will be carried out on behalf of the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs (MRRA) and is a local initiative to combat climate change by improving transportation efficiency.

By adapting web tools to coordinate the sharing of cars and government departments’ mobility resources, the agency will effectively be promoting more sustainable transport options, especially if an electric-powered car fleet is made available. The project will raise awareness about the potential
environmental benefits of alleviating congestion and improving air quality while at the same time offering economic savings.

The project consortium consists of nine partners from six Mediterranean countries. Each partner is involved in the transportation sector while demonstrating a variety of local situations and solutions for those areas suffering mobility problems is different social and economic situations.

This International Event for LiMIT4WeDA will be held on the 30th March 2012 at the Corinthia Palace Hotel, Balzan. LiMIT4WeDA’s consortium, the transport experts and local stakeholders will discuss the main aspects of public transport and pilot project pre-design in the Mediterranean region.
