Empower

Completed project

The EMPOWER concept aims to encourage and enable the active participation of citizens that consume and produce energy in the electrical system. It is based on the insight that a significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and an increase of energy efficiency require radical changes in the way we produce and consume energy.

The EMPOWER project was implemented by MIEMA between 2015 and 2018 and addressed the topic “Modernising the European electricity grid: LCE 7 – 2014: Distribution grid and retail market” of the call “Competitive Low-Carbon Energy” of the HORIZON 2020 work programme 2014-2015.

The EMPOWER project focused on the global perspective of the local electricity business organization. The overall project objective was to develop and verify a local market place and innovative business models which include operational methods to encourage micro-generation and active participation of procumers to exploit the created flexibility for the benefit of all connected to the local grid.

Specific objectives included:

  • Develop a new market design for local trading and involvement of the consumer/prosumer end of the distribution net by means of cloud based ICT.
  • Develop prosumer oriented business models relevant for the market design developed.
  • Develop an ICT based monitoring and management system that can be accommodated in the SESP control cloud.
  • Develop full bidirectional and secure communication.
  • Integrate the different parts and demonstrate the viability of the concept created in at least two physical regions in Europe.
