Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency
MIEMA is a public equivalent body. The general purpose of MIEMA is to promote and support the intelligent use and management of energy and energy – related resources.
MIEMA aims to be at the forefront of the national and European effort for sustainable energy, promoting green growth and fighting climate change. Within its sphere of competence, it provides support to policymakers, develops and implements projects, offers training courses, carries out energy audits, draws up energy plans (like SEAPs) and organizes public awareness campaigns. Its activities focus on 5 main thrusts, namely RES installations, energy efficiency in buildings, clean transport, eco-innovation, and training and awareness.
MIEMA forms part of the European network of Energy Agencies. In Malta, it works closely with the relevant ministries, municipalities, academic institutions, national agencies, SME networks, professional bodies and others. Through its association to the EEA programme, it has granted the European Energy Award to Maltese municipalities actively pursuing sustainable energy initiatives. It has also brought together the national platform for improving building skills. Moreover, together with MCAST, it has set up the Joint Research Centre for RES and Environmental Sustainability, based at the Institute of Applied Science, on the main MCAST Campus.
MIEMA’s core team is made up of 10 professionals, but the Agency also relies on specifically recruited specialists for its project-based activities. Indeed, MIEMA has participated in several projects related to the topic, under different European programmes (Erasmus+, Lifelong Learning, Horizon2020, Intelligent Energy Europe, Interreg IVC, MED, Italia-Malta Cross-Border Cooperation, etc).
Together with the Building Regulation Office and the Building Industry Consultative Council, MIEMA overlooks the developments of building regulations and building control regulations in line with the Building Regulation Act.
MIEMA has carried out extensive monitoring of buildings’ energy digestion and comfort in order to advise the authorities on how to improve the quality of the Maltese buildings to become a strong social and economic contributor to improve sustainable development. It also provides Energy Performance Certification Services. It provides EPC assessors and the general public with information and material relevant to Energy Performance Certificate services.
Through the Crim-Safri project (Italia – Malta), together with MCAST, it has set up the Joint Research Centre for RES and Environmental Sustainability, based at the Institute of Applied Science, on the main MCAST Campus.
